Inferring the Intermediate-mass Black Hole Number Density from Gravitational-wave Lensing Statistics

چکیده

The population properties of intermediate mass black holes remain largely unknown, and understanding their distribution could provide a missing link in the formation supermassive galaxies. Gravitational wave observations can help fill gap from stellar to holes. In our work, we propose new method for probing lens populations through lensing statistics gravitational waves, here focusing on inferring number density Using hierarchical Bayesian inference injected lensed find that existing observatories at design sensitivity either identify an $10^6 \mathrm{Mpc}^{-3}$ or place upper bound $\lesssim 10^4 $10^3 \mathrm{Mpc}^{-3}$. More broadly, be applied probe other forms compact matter as well.

Gravitational waves from eccentric intermediate mass binary black hole mergers

Owing to the difficulty of direct observation, mergers of intermediate-mass black hole binaries are relatively less understood compared to stellar-mass binaries; however, the gravitational waves from their last few orbits and ringdown fall in the band of ground-based detectors. Because the typical source is expected to circularize prior to entering LIGO or VIRGO’s range, inspiral searches conce...

Gravitational Radiation from Intermediate-Mass Black Holes

Recent X-ray observations of galaxies with ROSAT, ASCA, and Chandra have revealed numerous bright off-center point sources which, if isotropic emitters, are likely to be intermediate-mass black holes, with M ∼ 102−4 M⊙. The origin of these objects is under debate, but observations suggest that a significant number of them currently reside in young high-density stellar clusters. There is also gr...

Gravitational Wave Bursts from the Galactic Massive Black Hole

The Galactic massive black hole (MBH), with a mass of M• = 3.6 × 106M⊙, is the closest known MBH, at a distance of only 8 kpc. The proximity of this MBH makes it possible to observe gravitational waves from stars with periapse in the observational frequency window of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA ). This is possible even if the orbit of the star is very eccentric, so that the orb...

Intermediate Strength Gravitational Lensing

Weak lensing is found in the correlations of shear in 104 galaxy images, strong lensing is detected by the obvious distortion of a single galaxy image, whereas intermediate lensing requires detection of less obvious curvature in several neighboring galaxies. Small impact-parameter lensing causes a sextupole distortion whose orientation is correlated with the quadrupole distortion (shear). By lo...

Statistics of mass substructure from strong gravitational lensing: quantifying the mass fraction and mass function

ABSTRACT A Bayesian statistical formalism is developed to quantify the level at which the mass-function (dN/dm ∝ m−α) and the projected cumulative mass fraction ( f ) of (CDM) substructure in strong gravitational-lens galaxies, with arcs or Einstein rings, can be recovered as function of the lens-survey parameters and the detection threshold of the substructure mass. The method is applied to di...
